The Arab Women Organization (AWO) annually participates in the International Campaign The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. The UN started the international campaign in 1991 to commemorate the anniversary of the Mirabal sisters who opposed the dictatorship in the Dominican and were assassinated on 25 November 1960.
The slogan of 2022 carries the word “UNiTE” to overcome GBV in 2030 alongside with the SDGs. Undoubtedly, this international slogan responds to the immediate need of uniting the efforts of all, especially the government and civil society, including feminist NGOs, the private sector and the Media, to exchange knowledge and create a dialogue with the decision-makers to combat what is called the hidden pandemic.
During the COVID-19 closures, GBV depth and spread were disclosed to confirm research results that 1 out of 3 women is battered and a survivor of violence. All and above, Jordan had seen in 2022 a series of “Women Killing” within families that distorted the image of achieving progress in women’s rights. Additionally, there is a rise in Cyber Attacks on women activists
AWO adheres to the UN call for “UNiTE” to stop GBV in order to consolidate common work to achieve gender equality as stated in Goal 5 of the SDGs.
